This file provides the fewest number of fields that are needed in order to start with selection of Year, Make, Model and end up with a 10 digit VIN pattern for carrier / quote submission.

Use of the VINBasic file is as simple as importing into a database platform of choice (MS Access, MYSQL, SQL Server, Oracle etc), and then matching a 17 digit VIN to the pattern provided (for VIN decoding).
VINBasic Autos contains most commonly used fields including vehicle type, doors, dimensions and weights, engines, transmissions and drive types, as well as some industry specific fields such as restraint type, available colors, and vehicle MSRP (price as new).
There is no need to "parse" out a VIN and associate values with each portion of the VIN such as the WMI (World Manufacturers Identification). This has already been done as part of the preparation of the VINBasic file to make it as easy as possible to VIN decode vehicles.
The VIN Pattern uses digits 1-8, skipping 9, and using digits 10 and 11 of the 17 digit VIN. For example, the VIN Pattern for the VIN 1GA2GYDG2A1107842 would be as follows:
1GA2GYDG|2|A1|107842* Resulting in: 1GA2GYDGA1
Typical use of the data would be to create a series of queries starting with Year, Make, Model, utilizing the provided fields to refine the query until a VIN Pattern (s) had been narrowed down. The letter "x" would be used in some cases depending on the insurance carrier or warranty carrier to mask the check sum digit (9) resulting in an 11 digit VIN stub.
For example, the VIN Stub for the VIN pattern 1GA2GYDGA1 would be submitted to carrier as follows:
1GA2GYDGxA1
Or in the case of an 12 digit VIN stub / partial VIN requirement:
1GA2GYDGxA1x
The last six digits of the VIN number are a unique serial number and are not able to be generated. If a 17 digit submission needed to be made to the carrier - it is typical that "x" would be used (xxxxxx) for the last six digits.
