Enhanced VIN Data Overview

All VINs are composed of two general parts: an informational or “pattern” portion of the VIN (VIN pattern) and a serial number portion. Many VIN decoding solutions do not decode the entirety of a vehicle’s VIN number, with some even omitting portions of the VIN pattern from their decoding process. As a result, they will not be able to return many valuable vehicle-specific details that could be used to improve your products and drive efficiency in your business.

The serial portion, when combined with the pattern, makes the VIN specific to that exact vehicle, but does not contain any hints as to how that vehicle is actually configured. These unidentified vehicle details include optional equipment, packages, and safety features, vehicle exterior and interior color, and frequently the vehicle’s trim. DataOne Software unlocks this key “as-built” data for each specific vehicle with our Enhanced VIN Data solutions, powered by OEM build data and Verified Records.

All our industry-leading VIN decoding is returned with both manufacturer-specific terminology and DataOne’s standard vehicle descriptors, which standardize the equipment across all brands, making this information easy to consume. This enriched VIN decoding, built through a commitment to in-depth research, data processing, and quality assurance, can only be found through DataOne Software.

Trim-level and Option-level Data to Match Your Needs

DataOne Software’s Enhanced VIN Data offers two levels of detail - trim level and option level.

Trim-level VIN decoding provides the vehicle's assigned trim, along with the standard equipment that is associated with that specific vehicle. Vehicle data returned includes weights and dimensions, safety features, all available options, interior and exterior color, installed transmission, along with the base MSRP.

Option-level VIN decoding builds on Trim-level VIN decoding with an additional level of vehicle details by providing all installed options and packages and the as-built MSRP for that vehicle.

Comparing OEM Build Data and Verified Records

DataOne provides two sources for Enhanced VIN Data: OEM Build Data, and DataOne’s independently sourced Verified Records. Each provides a dependable source of truth for business-critical vehicle data, such as the installed options, packages, features, and colors.

OEM Build Data - Manufacturer-Direct Data Optimized for Business Use

OEM Build Data is provided for licensing in partnership with automakers. This partnership empowers DataOne to provide our users with a record of how each vehicle was configured at the factory, direct from the OEM across model years. with complete coverage for all the vehicles sold within the model years offered. DataOne enhances the source data provided by our OEM partners by passing along each brand's manufacturer-specific terminology, while also translating and delivering those vehicle details in a standardized naming convention. This normalized data enables organizations to understand and act on this data faster than raw build data, driving greater efficiency throughout business-critical processes.

Pattern-vs-Trim-vs-Option-Level

While a powerful source of Enhanced VIN Data, OEM Build Data does have some limitations. It is not available for all manufacturers, and those that make it available may limit the use of this data only to specific purposes.

Verified Records - Flexibility and Industry-Leading Accuracy

Verified Records are an equivalent and complementary source of Enhanced VIN Data. DataOne has identified and validated “build data” equivalent level of vehicle details in creating our Verified Records. These Verified Records are available for licensing through our VIN Decoder API, which can be especially useful in combination with OEM Build Data, or when OEM build data may not be an option. Verified records have been proven to offer industry-leading accuracy, identifying vehicle-specific features and installed options that are essential to optimizing the merchandising of your vehicle inventory. DataOne’s Verified Records provide the power of Enhanced VIN Data with more flexibility and can be applied to any needed customer use case.
